Keys to successful internet video

1.       Do not over produce!  Videos that feature someone related to the web site are more interesting than videos that appear to have actors.  Some roughness is acceptable and expected.

2.       Audio must be clear. People will put up with videos that have bad lighting, trembling camera work,  and even with people who don't belong on camera.  But as soon as they can't understand what's being said, they are gone!

3.       Viral video requires a huge effort to launch. Although viral videos once upon a time just happened, they now require orchestrated campaigns, multiple postings to sites, and enlisting a network.  Why is this now necessary?  Because that's what your competition is doing.

4.       Viral videos must appeal to 18 to 30 year old women.  That's because they have the largest network of friends and are most apt to pass something on.

5.       Hard sells rarely work. Your video must make the watcher want to help you.  To that end, do things that personalize you with your audience -     show a blooper, or confess that it's your first time, or let them know you're sailing in the dark and would appreciate any feedback they could give.

6.       If you want people to act on your video, supply social proof that other people are doing it too.  This can be as simple as,"Most of the people who have done x tell me that they found it easy to do."

7.       Use multiple locations; it registers with watchers as being multiple contacts which helps create a relationship between you and your audience.

8.       Enjoy being with your audience.  Again, the video is about forming a relationship.  And we all are more apt to like people whom we believe like us. Smile, laugh, be easy.  Those QVC folks aren't the way they are because that job is so much fun!
